Police are now looking into the motive behind the attack, which happened in the city of Sagamihara, just west of Tokyo.

Police said they received a call from an employee of the facility reporting the attack about 2:30 a.m. Tuesday (1:30 p.m. ET Monday), according to state broadcaster NHK.
Kyodo said the man had turned himself into a police station. He left the knife in his auto when he entered the station. Officials say the man confessed to the stabbings and has been arrested on murder charges.
Police in Sagamihara, Kanagawa Prefecture, west of Tokyo have arrested a 20-year-old suspect, Kyodo reported.
“Doctors confirmed the deaths of 19 people”, the fire department official told AFP. The Tsukui Yamayuri En (Tsukui Lily Garden) facility is home to 149 residents aged between 19 and 75, and cares for people with a wide range of disabilities. He killed eight children, and seriously wounded 13 other children and two teachers.

A man who lives near the site of the latest attack said he was shocked such an attack happened in the quiet, semi-rural area near Mount Takao, a mountain popular with hikers.
