At least 16 injured in huge Dubai hotel fire
Fire last night ripped through a five star Address Downtown hotel just yards from where tens of thousands were preparing to see the New Year in Dubai, the capital of the United Arab Emirates.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) – A towering inferno that engulfed a 63-story luxury hotel in Dubai on New Year’s Eve burned on into the first morning of 2016 as firefighters worked to douse its embers on Friday.
The Dubai government tweeted, BBC said, that 14 people had suffered minor injuries, one moderate injury and there was one “heart attack case” due to “overcrowding and smoke”.
The government media office said on Twitter that the fire “originated from outside” the 20th floor of the hotel and that internal fire systems had prevented it from spreading inside.
Burning debris rained down from the 300m building as fire crews raced to the scene.
More than an hour after the fire broke out, the government said the blaze was 90 percent under control, although images on television appeared to show that it was continuing to burn.
A huge fireworks display kicked off at the Burj Khalifa as smoke poured from the nearby hotel.
Dubai’s New Year celebrations would proceed despite the fire.
Business Insider caught up with a resident of downtown Dubai who had an unobstructed view of the blaze from the 5th floor of his apartment just blocks away from the Address.
The hotel towers over the Souq Al Bahar, a popular shopping area with walkways that connect to the Burj Khalifa and the Middle East’s largest mall, the Dubai Mall. Media reports state that there is no immediate news of casualties.
In February, a huge fire gutted one of the emirate’s tallest buildings, destroying luxury flats in the Torch tower and triggering an evacuation of nearby blocs in the Dubai Marina neighbourhood – a district popular among expatriates.
The fireworks display went on for minutes as the crowd recorded and took pictures of the two skyscrapers.
In 2014, the Guinness Book of World Records declared the Dubai New Years Eve celebration the largest fireworks display of all time.
The city says the fire started outside the hotel.

Among the revelers who stuck around after the fireworks to watch the effort to extinguish the burning hotel was Girlie Omilda, who told the AP she was concerned about threats from extremists such as the barbaric Islamic State terror group.
