At least 17 killed in army ammunitions depot fire

The incident took place in the wee hours of morning as a fire broke out in the depot storing ammunition.

A blaze at a large military ammunition depot in India has killed at least 17 people and left more than a dozen injured, authorities have said.

The central ammunition depot in Pulgaon, which is 110 kilometres from Nagpur, is one of India’s biggest arms depots.

The main source of the fire, a shed which caught fire has been extinguished, reported The New Indian Express.

According to reports, fire out between 1:30 and 2 am on Tuesday at CAD in Pulgaon.

The exact cause of the fire is not yet known, and the damage to ammunition is being assessed. The situation is being stabilized.

Local TV channels showed footage of the raging fire and reported that several fire tenders have been pressed into service to bring the blaze under control. “Secondary fire and explosions can not be ruled out now”, the Army officer said refusing to go into the reasons of the fire.

People residing in nearby villages of CAD have been evacuated to avoid further casualties.
