At least 2 dead in Kenya after boat with 23 people capsizes

A passenger boat capsized after a hard-hitting collision with a fishing vessel leaving two children dead today in western Kenya.

The passenger boat was headed for Kiwa Island from Remba Island when the incident occurred at about 2 a.m. Wednesday (2300 GMT Tuesday), regional police chief Willy Lugusa stated.

One of the boats was said to have been ferrying fishermen from Remba to Sori Market in Migori County.

A spokesman said the boat, which was travelling in Kenya’s part of the vast inland lake, struck a fishing boat in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Mr.Lugusa said that 21 people from the passenger board were rescued. The cause of the accident is not clear, however, some local media reports said two boats collided resulting in the accident.

The two children bodies were recovered by the rescue team.

The passenger boat capsized on Lake Victoria Kenya while it was travelling between the islands of Kiwa and Remba
