“In fact, we may have had three tornadoes on the same cell because we had two needle tornadoes plus the big one beside it”, Robinson says.

Most of Wednesday’s damage was in a rural area between Chapman and the town of Abilene, Gardner said.

No fatalities were immediately reported.

Most watches and warnings had expired by mid-evening, but similar conditions are expected through the week as a series of large storm systems passes through the Plains states, the National Weather Service said.

Tornadoes also touched down in Michigan, Texas, Colorado and Oklahoma.

No injuries were reported, and preliminary reports of minor damage from a probable tornado in Oklahoma hadn’t been confirmed. The boy was found almost two hours later after a neighbor spotted him about two blocks from where he was swept away.

According to the Wichita forecast office, a total of two inches fell between midnight and 1:30 AM Wednesday morning in the Southwestern corner of Butler County, and Southeastern corner of Sedgwick County.

The drowning in Oklahoma happened early Wednesday when a vehicle was swept into a drainage culvert near the small town of Davenport, about 50 miles northeast of Oklahoma City, the Highway Patrol said.

The National Weather Service will conduct damage surveys Wednesday.
