The bicyclists were on their weekly ride and had just reached the 5500 block of Westnedge Avenue in Cooper Township, just north of Kalamazoo. That’s near Markin Glen Park. None of the victims are children, as an official had said earlier.

The four injured cyclists all remain in serious condition at area hospitals. It did not release any further details about those patients.

Authorities plan to brief the public on the crash during a scheduled 11 p.m. news conference.

A driver struck the bicyclists and then fled on foot, Matyas said.

Another witness, Arika Kruger, said she didn’t see anyone walk away from the crash.

Markus Eberhard was leaving the park after fishing and said he almost was hit by the pickup.

“I saw a bunch of bikes hit the front of his truck and a couple of them flew”, he told the television station.

“Sounded like he hit a tree”.

Witnesses observed the oncoming pickup truck, a blue Chevy 2500 driving erratically in the opposite direction before plowing into the group.

Police were having trouble identifying some of the victims apparently because they weren’t carrying I.D.

Multiple police and fire agencies are on the scene.
