“It’s not a cold world, it’s only cold if you make it”, said Hill, before adding, “I love you all, but we can’t get away from the fact that the savages got to be held accountable”.
A member of the federal group identified his office as the department’s Community Relations Service.
All four suspects are being held in the Hennepin County Jail without bail on suspicion of assault, according to online jail records.
In an interview on CNN, Raeisha Williams, communications chair of the Minneapolis NAACP, said protesters believe police officers were involved with the attack on them. Originally, the county had until 4 p.m. Wednesday to file charges – it now has until noon Monday.
The Associated Press is not naming the man because he has not formally been charged.
More than 150 people are gathered in front of the police station, talking and eating around campfires.
In a video, Mayor Betsy Hodges said she “abhors last night’s acts”. “If she’s for her city, she will see that justice be held to these officers”. Protests by activist groups such as Black Lives Matter have become commonplace in US cities.
Habu said a crowd gathered around the shooting scene and police used a chemical irritant to push them back. Police said three of the men are white and the fourth is Asian.
The protesters were shot after they confronted several people near the north side police precinct that has been the site of demonstrations since police fatally shot 24-year-old Jamar Clark.
The victims, all Black men – ages 19 through 43 – were taken to hospitals with noncritical injuries, according to police.
One of the men wore a mask, said Dana Jaehnert, who had been at the protest site since early evening.
Clark, who was black, died November 15 in what police say was a scuffle with officers responding to an assault of a woman in which he was a suspect. State and federal investigations are underway.
“Jamar, your life did and does have goal”, said Bishop Richard D. Howell Jr., a bishop at the Shiloh Temple. Attempts by Reuters to reach family members of the four men arrested in that case were not successful. Inside it, his obituary said the 24-year-old man “liked to swim, fish, listen to music, play basketball, be with family and take trips to Charlotte, North Carolina”.
Ali spoke outside the church hosting Clark’s funeral. “We ain’t turning around, but we’re here fighting for justice”.
Protester Jie Wronski-Riley, who is also on the security team, said most of the crowd stopped following the men about midway up the street, but a few protesters gave chase. Protesters claim he was handcuffed, but no evidence has been released that shows that.
A fifth person – only identified as a 32-year-old Hispanic – was also detained, but later released.
“We are locked and loaded”, SaigaMarine said, who later said “stay white” before ending the video.
Expressing concern for the safety of the protesters outside the precinct, Jamar Clark’s brother, Eddie Sutton, urged an end to the encampment.
None of the five demonstrators wounded in Monday’s shooting received life-threatening injuries, police said.
Belton said the vigil should end to “restore order” to the community, which he said has endured open gunfire, traffic and service interruptions, smoke from the protesters’ fires and hours of helicopter noise.
Questions have been raised whether Clark was handcuffed when he was shot, which police have denied.
Law enforcement officials have not said whether they are investigating the shooting as a possible hate crime.
The officers involved were Mark Ringgenberg and Dustin Schwarze.
