At least 6 dead in boarding house fire in Atlanta

Six people were killed Monday morning at a northwest Atlanta house fire, according to Atlanta Fire and Rescue.

The fire department said that because the structure was so severely damaged and parts of the home collapsed, they were unable to complete their search of the home early Monday, CBS affiliate WGCL reported.

FOX 5 spoke with homeowner Ernest Eberhardt who told us he rented out rooms to help people in need. He also said the home did not have an exit at the back of the house.

“We got on scene and did the best job we could to try to get inside – there was just too much fire”, he told reporters at the scene.

Stafford said that when fire crews arrived, the fire was going through the roof and the home had “collapsed in on itself”. The fire doesnt seem suspicious at this point, but the investigation is ongoing, he said. Jennifer Haggins said her best friends, one of whom welcomed people in his home off the street, died in the fire.“He had a good heart, ” Haggins said.
