More than 1.99 million people in 11 cities in Hebei were affected and 1.23 lakh people evacuated due to heavy rain since yesterday, local officials said. A heavy rain hit the middle and southern areas of Hebei Province in last three days.

The provincial water resources department said rain caused disasters in 19 counties.

Relief goods have been sent to the worst-hit cities including Handan, Xingtai and the provincial capital of Shijiazhuang.

Almost 68,000 residents had been relocated as the provincial land resources bureau warned of flooding, landslides and mountain torrents, it said.

In the provincial capital, Shijiazhuang, 13 road underpasses were also waterlogged.

At least 24 people in the provinces of Hebei, which surrounds Beijing, Shanxi, Henan and Shaanxi have been confirmed dead in a rainstorm that has been pounding the region since Monday, according to figures from the civil affairs ministry.

Weather authorities in the province have issued their highest, or red, alert for rainstorms, the agency added.

Almost 50 train trips were suspended, according to the railway bureau of Taiyuan, the provincial capital.

In Henan Province, which borders Shanxi, almost 100,000 residents were temporarily relocated in the city of Anyang as water levels of three major local reservoirs exceeded warning levels.

There were no reports of any casualties. More than 3,000 people are rushing to close the breach.
