The double bombing came less than two weeks after gunmen attacked the American University in Kabul, killing 13 people.

Some 42 people were rescued during the operation, including 10 foreigners, he added.
Explosions rang out Tuesday during an hours-long attack on an worldwide charity in Kabul, the latest assault in a wave of violence in the Afghan capital that has killed at least 24 people and wounded dozens. A major issue hampering rescue efforts was that the high level of security made the building hard to enter and clear.
The Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attacks.
The assault came hours after high-level officials, including an army general, were killed in two blasts near the defence ministry, in an attack apparently created to inflict mass casualties.
The Taliban immediately claimed responsibility for that attack, in which a suicide bomber caught security forces personnel and civilians who rushed to help victims of the first explosion.
Firemen, meanwhile, raced to retrieve some bodies thrown into the Kabul River by the intensity of the first blast on the bridge.
Public Health Ministry spokesman Ismail Kawasi said there were civilians among the dead and that there were fears the toll could rise further.
The violence highlights the deteriorating security situation in the country.
Taliban spokesman, Zabiullah Mujahed, tweeted that the group carried out the attacks.
Sediq Sediqqi, a spokesman for the Afghan Interior Ministry, said that an army general and a police colonel in charge of the area’s security were among the dead Monday.
City traffic was blocked in several places and schools in the vicinity were closed.
A third explosion and gunfire has been heard in Kabul, just hours after the city was rocked by twin blasts that killed at least 24 and injured at least 91.
It is unknown whether the violence has caused any casualties so far.
Afghan forces backed by United States troops are seeking to head off a potential Taliban takeover of Lashkar Gah, the capital of the southern opium-rich province of Helmand.
