At least seven people killed as tornadoes and storms tear through Texas
“Severe storms and heavy rain are possible in parts of the Gulf Coast region through the southern Plains to Ohio Valley on Saturday and Sunday, where flooding is possible”, the weather agency said.

Local media said five people in cars were probably blown off a motorway in Garland, near Dallas.
Garland Police Lt. Pedro Barineau said Sunday morning that eight people have died and 15 were injured in Garland, which is about 20 miles northeast of Dallas.
The National Weather Service confirmed tornadoes hit multiple cities in the greater Dallas area on Saturday evening, and there were reports of widespread damage and flooding.
The emergency manager of Ellis county south of Dallas, Stephanie Parker, posted on twitter: “We have destroyed and damaged homes”. In addition, flooding left 50 homes uninhabitable and closed 40 roads in Monroe County, which got 10 to 12 inches (about 25 to 30 cm) of rain, he said. “No volunteers needed at this time”.
Harn says there are no active rescues underway, though first responders continue to search houses for anyone trapped after the storms passed.
Other parts of Texas were dealing with strong winds and precipitation, the weather service said. Residents in Lubbock and Amarillo prepared for an evening storm. Of those, two were confirmed visually, but official surveys will be conducted Sunday, officials said.
Alabama Department of Corrections spokesman Bob Horton says 336 inmates were evacuated from the Red Eagle Community Work Center around 12:30 a.m. Saturday. “Extensive damage has been reported to vehicles, homes, and apartments in the same area”.
In total, 17 people were killed in Mississippi, Tennessee and Arkansas as tornadoes and floods ripped through neighborhoods, tearing down infrastructure and uprooting trees.
Glinda Lewis, owner of the Plantation Place RV Park, which was hit by a tornado, said a number of residents there were injured and taken to hospitals.
Three additional deaths were reported in Collin County, said Chris Havey, a spokesman for the sheriff’s office.
In Alabama, Gov. Robert Bentley on Saturday visited weather-damaged areas in Coffee County.
The flooding is the result of heavy downpours that have thrashed the southeastern US since Wednesday, bringing record rainfalls in some areas. Some parts of the Panhandle could see as many as 14 inches of snow, with sub-zero wind chills and accumulating ice.
