At NORAD, Santa Tracker is ready to go
NORAD was created in 1958 by the governments of Canada and the United States as a bi-national air defense command.

For the men and women of EADS and NORAD, the one-day mission takes weeks to prepare.
NORAD’s Santa Tracker has been operating since 1955, after an advertisement misprinted the telephone number for kids to call Santa. Instead of listing the number for Sears’ Santa hotline, it posted the number for the Continental Air Defense Command center.
When Colonel Harry Shoup realised what had happened, he quickly told his staff to check the radar for indications of Santa making his way south of the North Pole and give the children who called updates on his current position.
And the practice has continued ever since.
Hundreds of volunteers are answering calls from kids around the world wanting the latest info on Santa’s status.
And don’t panic if you haven’t got the latest smartphone or tablet as you can also watch all the action via the Norad Santa Tracker website.
Offering an answer to the question “where is Santa Claus now?”, the search giant’s bit of kit has been up and running since 2004.
“NORAD is responsible for basically all incoming threats to North America”, Lt. Joe Nawrocki, NORAD Spokesperson, says.
Noting NORAD’s longtime support of Santa’s Christmas Eve flight, EADS commander Col. Michael J. Norton said “we are always delighted to help”.
The Norad app brings a precise Global Positioning System location of Santa’s progress and will show you exactly where the jolly fellow is.
“They ask toys from the “Frozen” movie, and a lot of them want world peace, and lots of kids write that they will want to visit Santa Claus someday in Rovaniemi”, Santa Claus Post Office Elf Sara said.
NORAD’s Santa operations center opens at 4 a.m. MST on December 24.
