AT&T Rolls Out New Mobile Plans, Eliminates Data Overage Fees

You can still enjoy the unlimited text and talk, sharable data, Rollover Data, mobile hotspot, and worldwide texting. “Overage charges trigger calls in to customer service, more unhappy customers and ultimately more churn”.

AT&T has tried to simplify the plans by eliminating those overage charges.

These new plans, which go into effect August 21, also include all the perks of AT&T’s old Mobile Share Value plans, including unlimited domestic talk and text, rollover data, and shareable data.

All the new plans include an access charge of $10 to $40 per month for each device, AT&T said.

The higher prices come with more data, reducing the cost per gigabyte for many customers.

AT&T now offers unlimited data to its wireless customers who sign up for its DIRECTV television service. Those on 10GB or higher plans will also retain the ability to have free talk and text in Canada and Mexico as well as the ability to use their data in Mexico for no additional charge.

AT&T’s latest effort, coupled with Verizon’s and T-Mobile’s recent initiatives, serves as a reminder of how much carriers are vying for customer loyalty in an increasingly competitive space. As a result, customers now using Mobile Share Value will see the price of data per MB decline, while overages are eliminated. The new offer begins with as low as $30 for 1 gigabyte of data, in comparison with $30 for 2 GB, earlier.

T-Mobile would continue to sell its Simple Choice plans with data limits “for a while as we unwind them” and the older unlimited plans would not be available from September 6, chief marketing officer Andrew Sherrard said in an interview. The new Mobile Share Advantage plan includes numerous features found in the Mobile Share Value plan.

“Last month, Verizon introduced a new “Safety Mode” for its own mobile plans that similarly throttles customers who go over their monthly bucket to avoid overages”, points out Chris Welch for The Verge. The access charge for basic/features phones will be $20 a month per phone on both plans.

Currently AT&T charges customers more if they use more data than they’ve signed up for under their tiered plans. There are two new plans actually available: the Mobile Share Advantage and Mobile Share Value.
