The beginning of Galen Rupp’s Olympic marathon career – opening with a bronze-medal performance – collided with the conclusion of Meb Keflezighi’s on Sunday.
Korir ran among the race leaders for almost two hours Sunday, actually holding the No. 1 spot at the halfway mark, but he fell back dramatically in the final stages, as did Biwott.
You see, Rupp can identify with Adam Sandler’s character, a hockey player who only reluctantly becomes a golfer in the movie to make some much-needed money.
Ethiopian Almaz Ayana set a world record in the women’s 10,000 meters by more than 14 seconds and followed that up with a bronze in the 5,000. With that in mind I fed my height and weight into the BBC’s Olympic Body Match interactive. “He said he’s a hockey player”. I don’t think I really, truly understood that until I started doing them.
A morning downpour put paid to any thoughts of a world record as 155 runners representing 80 countries splashed around the course snaking through the heart of Rio’s historic centER in conditions miles removed from the holiday brochures of sun-kissed Rio.
But this was only the second marathon run by Rupp, who made his debut at the Olympic trials in February.
French fighter Tony Yoka won a split-decision against Britain’s Joe Joyce to take the super-heavyweight title in boxing, where Uzbek fighters stole the show with two gold medals.
Kenya’s phenomenal Eliud Kipchoge stormed to a runaway marathon win and Brazil celebrated volleyball gold as the chaotic but compelling Rio Olympics prepared for the final curtain on Sunday.
It wasn’t until the very end, when Eliud Kipchoge of Kenya began accelerating for the finish and Rupp’s calves began cramping, that Rupp lost contact.
Kipchoge grabbed the lead in the marathon Sunday around the 21-mile mark and finished off his first Olympic victory in this event in a time of 2 hours, 8 minutes and 44 seconds.
The rout capped a brilliant tenure as Team USA head coach for Mike Krzyzewski, who signs off after guiding the US to three consecutive Olympic gold medals and an astounding 88-1 record in worldwide competition.
“I definitely fought it a while”, Rupp said.
American swimmer Ryan Lochte says he over-exaggerated what happened at a Rio de Janeiro gas station and acknowledged it was his “immature behavior” that got him and three teammates into a mess that consumed the final days of the Olympics.
Having relatives in prison meant Lilesa could not stay quiet on the Olympic stage, no matter the consequences. I have never felt like this before. He slipped on the wet surface just before the finish and then did a few push-ups before getting up and crossing the line.

“It was a championship, and it was a bit slow so I chose to take over”, Kipchoge said.
