Atlantic City Hotel Set to Close This Fall

“Currently the Taj is losing multi-millions a month, and now with this strike we see no path to profitability”, Tony Rodio, president and chief executive officer of Tropicana Entertainment, which runs the property, said in a statement.

The Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City says it plans to close its doors after Labor Day.

In 2014 four casinos were shut down in Atlantic City and as an aftermath 8,000 workers lost their jobs. “Instead he’d rather slam the door shut on these long-term workers just to punish them and attempt to break their strike”.

“Furthermore, today’s actions only further prove to voters why we need to continue to vigorously fight the referendum to expand casino gaming to North Jersey”, Mazzeo continued, “an effort that would put thousands more of Atlantic County’s hard-working middle-class families on the unemployment line”.

Bob McDevitt, president of the local chapter of the UniteHere union, on Wednesday denounced the closure and accused Icahn of being petty, saying he had taken away workers’ healthcare, retirement and dignity. Although the fact that the casino venue that has formerly been considered one of the centerpieces of the once-popular gambling destination will no longer welcome visitors from around the world may strike as somewhat surreal at first, its closure is not exactly coming out of the blue. It all shows that now, a year later, the casino has not improved its profitability. The company filed for bankruptcy in 2004. Remaining operators in Atlantic City include Caesars Entertainment Corp. and MGM Resorts International, as well as privately-owned casinos.

According to Rodio, Icahn’s company has lost almost US$100 million “trying to save the Taj”.

“The great deal-maker would rather burn the Trump Taj Mahal down just so he can control the ashes”, Mr. McDevitt said.

“Atlantic City was a very good cash cow for me for a long time”.

Casino workers wanted was a restoration of pension benefits and health insurance that were promised to them during bankruptcy proceedings before Icahn took over.

The report added that the Trump Taj Mahal workers are among the lowest-paid in Atlantic City, getting an average wage of less than United States dollars 12 an hour.

Prosecutors say Adams followed five women from the Resorts Casino to their hotel room, forced his way inside and demanded money.
