Two men have been arrested in connection with a robbery outside an Atlantic City casino that critically wounded a police officer and left one suspect dead. Martell Chisholm, 19, of Millville, and Demetrius Cross, 28, of Bridgeton, each were being held on two counts of attempted murder, three counts of robbery and weapons offenses, Ruberton said. Family members have identified the deceased as 25-year-old Jerome Damon.
One was seriously wounded as he was shot getting out of his auto.
Authorities had released video late Saturday afternoon showing six men they said were “persons of interest” in the case. Prosecutors did not disclose further details of the stop.
“It’s a sad commentary on society”, said Atlantic City mayor Don Guardian.
White said despite the police presence and the ongoing search, the city’s popular outlet mall was open Saturday for tourists in town for Labor Day weekend. “The Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office along with the Atlantic City Police Department, the New Jersey State Police, the New Jersey Office of the Attorney General, the Atlantic City Task Force, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and law enforcement partners in Cumberland County, coordinated investigative efforts with assistance from the public to locate and apprehend the suspects”.
Authorities said the officers saw three men trying to rob three others. Prosecutors didn’t say why the vehicle was originally pulled over.
The NJ Cop Shot program is offering $20,000 to anyone with information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspects.
Atlantic City Police Chief Henry White said the shooting broke out after officers stopped three men.
White said at least one of the men in the auto opened fire. The injured officer was taken to Atlanticare Regional Medical Center for surgery where he is critical condition.
This story has been corrected to show that the shooting happened around 2:30 a.m., not 4 a.m.

The second police officer managed to dodge the bullets and shoot down one of the suspects. Another suspect was killed during the police shootout outside a casino Saturday morning. Maisonet was last reported in critical condition at a nearby hospital.
