Atletico ready to write Champions League history

Atletico Madrid seem to be relishing the role of the underdog in this Champions League campaign, having now knocked out the two favourites for the competition and reaching their second final in the space of three years.

Bayern beat Atletico Madrid 2-1 at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday night but went out on away goals after a 1-0 defeat in the first leg of their semi-final clash clash week.

“There is no point in thinking about what happened last year (against Barcelona) and the year before (against Real Madrid)”, said Bayern captain Philipp Lahm.

But the Spaniard insisted after the Bavarian giants went out to Atletico Madrid on away goals that he has “given his life” to Bayern whom he will leave at the end of the season for Manchester City. “I feel sorry for my players because they deserved the very best”.

A convincing 1-0 victory over City at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium means that Real will face Atletico on May 28 in a rematch of the 2014 final that it won in extra time. Now we need to lick our wounds and then it is off to Ingolstadt on Saturday.

Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane says he is delighted with the effort everyone showed in the magnificent win over Manchester City. In my opinion they were focused, they put us in trouble. “We managed to stay united and soak up the pressure to try and pull it off”.

“It was very intense and I’m so proud of this team”.

The Swans have secured their Premier League future and head coach Francesco Guidolin said: “I think it will make Chris Coleman the happiest man in Wales”.

“Yes, Atletico play destructive football but they knew exactly what they wanted and in this chess game Simeone made all the right moves”, said Olic, who played in two losing Champions League finals for Bayern before leaving in 2012 to join VfL Wolfsburg. “The people can say what they want, but it was really an honor to work with these players”, he added. “We didn’t deserve to lose, Madrid was lucky with its goal, when the ball was deflected. I want to be able to venture and learn about different things”. We haven’t won anything yet and it will be a hard game on the 28th May. The club had won four Champions League titles (known as the European Cup prior to 1992), but they’d lost in the finals five times, a ledger that was not good enough for the club’s notoriously demanding board of directors.
