Pakistani police previously told CNN that four bystanders were killed and five were injured. Heavy contingents of security forces were called in the area for operation. There are reportedly 25 to 30 houses of Christian community located in the vicinity.

Senior analyst Rahimullah Yousufzai said the vicinity is a high-security zone with military and paramilitary installments, and a cadet college is also situated there.

Pakistan has been struck by a number of large-scale militant attacks in recent months, including a March suicide bombing targeting Christians celebrating Easter in a park in the city of Lahore that killed around 70 people.

Authorities said a suicide bomber attacked the morning crowds outside a district court in Mardan, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The city suffered its worst terror attack in December 2014 when Taliban gunmen massacred more than 150 people, majority children, at an army-run school.
