Attack on USA troops near Afghan airport deadliest in months
An MoD spokeswoman said: “As part of the UK’s ongoing contribution to Nato’s Resolute Support Mission, a small number of United Kingdom personnel have deployed to Camp Shorabak in Helmand province in an advisory role”.

Britain ended combat operations in Afghanistan previous year but has about 450 troops there to train and support the Afghan army and security forces.
Following several days of intense fighting in Helmand, Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid tweeted Monday night that its fighters had “conquered” the Sangin bazaar and police headquarters and were entering the district center. Insecurity and Taliban control of parts of the province helped strengthen the insurgents and contributed to the production of poppy.
Fierce gun battles were going on between the Taliban and the Afghan security forces, Mr Rahimi was quoted as saying on Afghan TV, and the government had sent back-up forces.
In a report to the U.S. Congress released last week, the Pentagon said casualties among Afghan national defence and security forces, or ANDSF, rose 27 percent from January 1 to November 15, compared with the same period past year.
Sangin has particular resonance with the British as more than 100 of their 456 fatalities in Afghanistan since the start of the war in 2001 took place in the district. He told reporters that the Afghan air force had conducted 160 combat and transport flights over Sangin in the previous 48 hours.
BBC reported that British military personnel have been deployed to Helmand province as reports suggest the Taliban is close to overrunning Sangin town.
Monday was the deadliest day for American troops in Afghanistan since May 2013, when five were killed by a roadside bomb in the country’s south and two killed by an Afghan soldier in an insider attack in the west. Before Monday’s attack, the most recent American casualties in the country were on August 22, when three contractors were killed in a suicide attack in Kabul.
A USA military official in Afghanistan confirmed that the slain troops were all Americans. “The suicide bomber was riding a motorcycle and struck a joint patrol” of Afghan and American soldiers, Mr. Qudosi said.
Nicholas Haysom said Afghan troops are “stretched to capacity” and need better logistics, administration and efforts to boost morale.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the Monday suicide attack on USA troops that killed six near Bagram Air Field.
Atal said the Taliban leadership, based across the border in Pakistan, had decided six months ago to seize Helmand and base more of the insurgent command in the province. The deployment reportedly includes at least one SAS unit of around 30 soldiers who were operating alongside American special forces and the Afghan National Army.
Taliban fighters, sometimes working with other insurgent groups such as the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, have managed to overrun many districts across the country this year and also staged a three-day takeover of the major northern city of Kunduz.
The district police commander, Mohammad Dawood, earlier told the BBC the Taliban had completely cut the facility off from the rest of the province, and food and weapons supplies were running low.

Now, people are starting to believe the Taliban are indeed stronger than the government. US and Afghan military leaders say they are expecting a tough fight throughout 2016.
