Attacker killed after Tel Aviv stabbing

In the evening, a Palestinian stabbed and slightly injured a 25-year-old Israeli man at a mall in Petah Tikvah city in central Israel.

Police said they have arrested an 18-year-old Palestinian who fit the description of the assailant and continue to search for the weapon.

He insisted the Palestinians were not interested in a further escalation but that his “hands are with those who are protecting al-Aqsa mosque”. The assessment of Israeli military intelligence, according to the Israeli online news site, Ynet, is that he is seeking to curb violence.

An Israeli man is reported to be in serious condition in hospital after being stabbed by a Palestinian in Jerusalem, Israeli reports said on Thursday. A number of Palestinians have been killed and wounded during those riots.

It is the latest bloodshed in a wave of violence between Israelis and Palestinians stemming from recent restrictions by the Israeli government on the site Jews call the Temple Mount and Muslims the Noble Sanctuary.

Gaza-based Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh applauded the recent Palestinian stabbing attacks across Israel at a speech in Gaza Friday morning and called the surge in violence an “Intifada” or uprising. He told Channel 10 TV that two of the victims worked for City Hall, and that passers-by quickly rushed to help the wounded Arabs and provided first aid.

Fearing violence after prayers on Friday, Israeli police said only men over the age of 50 and women of all ages would be permitted to enter the al-Aqsa complex, a step that has been taken often in the past during periods of high tension.

The ambassador says a resolution also should provide “protection” for Palestinians, especially in east Jerusalem and at the Al-Aqsa mosque, a holy site at the heart of the recent clashes.

Meanwhile, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said in a meeting Thursday that Palestinians will not be “dragged” into more violence with Israel.

Many Palestinians believe Israel is trying to expand the Jewish presence at the site, a claim Israel adamantly denies.
