The gunmen stormed the army base at Tangdhar, 140 kilometres northwest of the main city of Srinagar, firing automatic weapons. “The heavy exchange of fire between the militants and army men continued for five hours during which all the three attackers were killed”, they said.
Initial reports had said that an Army JCO was also killed in the fighting.
The troops quickly retaliated to the fire and in the ensuing gun battle which continued for about seven hours all the three militants were killed, the sources said.
Speaking to the media persons Major General Paramjit Singh said, “It was a very successful operation and all terrorists were gunned down before the perimeters”.
Terrorists attacked army post in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir and Army is engaged in search operation while the number of terrorists involved in the attack is still unclear.
India accuses Pakistan of training and arming such rebels, and infiltrating them into the part of Muslim-majority Kashmir that it controls, a claim its neighbour denies. “So far, one jawan has been injured”, SSP Kupwara Ajaz Ahmed told ANI.
He said it was premature to say whether it was a fidayeen attack.
Indian Army has launched a massive combing operation to sanitise the area and find out if any ultra is hiding there.
The Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) claimed responsibility for the attack.
