The attempted robbery happened at about 8.30 on Wednesday night (3rd August 2016) as the United captain was on the pitch at Old Trafford raising money for charity in the match between Manchester United and Everton.
Rooney had already been substituted and was watching the closing stages of the game with his son in the dug-out as Memphis had his latest Old Trafford nightmare moment.
He dropped his rucksack, which was said to be filled with gaffer tape and electrical ties.
Three patrol cars raced to the scene as a police helicopter circled overhead and dog units scoured the luxury home’s extensive grounds in the village of Prestbury.
“The police seemed to appear from nowhere”.
CCTV footage showed a man wearing a balaclava at the house’s main entrance, peering through the windows before fleeing to a getaway vehicle once the alarm was activated. “They were swarming all over the place”.
His movements sparked the security alarm system, which caused lights and sirens to blare out.
