As governor, Engler pushed for education reforms, including charter schools, in MI in the 1990s.

An ex-Michigan governor has been selected to serve as interim president of Michigan State University, a decision that prompted outrage from students and faculty members.
“They called. I answered”. He served as MI governor from 1991 until the beginning of 2003. To those survivors of Larry Nassar, I am amazed by your strength and courage and I will not let your efforts be in vain.
When asked if he would pledge to hold a town hall meeting, Engler declined to do.
Amalfitano went on to say that Nassar’s crimes “repulse and sadden us”, adding that the damage Nassar has caused, will never be forgotten. I will state this: John Engler is the wrong direction. “This is already spurring protests”. Engler has been a Washington-based political consultant since leaving office in 2003. James Blanchard a senior adviser to work with government relations and legal affairs, the Detroit Free Press reports.
Martel read demands made by MSU College Democrats at the January 26 protest, after crowd members expressed anger over Engler attempting to move on.
The news sparked strong reactions on social media, with some people applauding the news and others anxious that Engler was too much of a political insider to convey empathy, earn trust and enact real change.
Engler’s was most recently employed with Business Roundtable for six years, retiring this past July.
Engler, 69, led the state for a dozen years from 1991 through 2002.
He found success working as a lobbyist in Washington, D.C.
Joining me now to help unpack all of this is Matt Mencarini. Secchia also suggested that parents uncomfortable sending their children to MSU should look elsewhere. Simon resigned as the school deals with fallout from the Larry Nassar sexual abuse case. The school has not said who will replace Hollis after his last day on the job Wednesday.
“But, I will be doing that in the coming days”. “This is just getting this first step today”.
Judging by a variety of other posts on social networking regarding Engler and the depth and breadth of his relationships with Michigan’s GOP, it’s safe to say some see a fair amount of ass-grabbing behind the scenes in the Old Boys Network that bodes ill for justice. “This is not an election”.
“I saw him take over as governor and do some pretty bold things”.
Members of the eight-person board of trustees, split between Republicans and Democrats, expect Engler, an alumnus, to be an effective leader who will make necessary changes. “So that a better MSU will be their legacy, and that they know something positive came out of their suffering”. However, we find this claim helpful in that it brought to light some significant problems that the practice will want to address.

“It’s just not a safe place to do this kind of hearing”, Lahn said. “And I think it will be much more attractive in a little while than it might be this morning, so that would be my goal”. There he preyed on girls and young women, especially young gymnasts who were sent to him by USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Olympic Committee. “You move right away”.
