Her allegations and similar ones from other women in the years that followed did not receive wide attention but exploded into view in late 2014, first online, then in the wider media, after comedian Hannibal Buress mocked Cosby as a hypocrite and called him a rapist during a standup routine.

The charges that Cosby sexually assaulted a woman in 2004 after plying her with drugs and alcohol filed in a Pennsylvania court on Wednesday mark the first criminal case against the comedian whose reputation suffered from dozens of misconduct accusations.

The Terps average 26 defensive rebounds a game which ranks them tied as the 166 best team in the country in that department. Maryland was able to overcome a first half when it shot a dismal 6-for-24 from the field and was outrebounded 19-13.

Smiling and politely thanking District Court Judge Elizabeth McHugh at the end of the brief proceeding, Cosby left the Elkins Park courthouse and was driven to a nearby police precinct to be finger-printed and booked.

For all the legal language the Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, district attorney-elect used in detailing “aggravated indecent assault” charges Wednesday against Bill Cosby, one ordinary, yet starkly powerful word in Kevin Steele’s account stood out: “friend”.

The case sets the stage for perhaps the biggest Hollywood celebrity trial of the mobile-all-the-time era and could send the 78-year-old Cosby to prison in the twilight of his life and pioneering career.

“On the evening in question, Mr. Cosby urged her to take pills that he provided to her, and to drink wine, the effect of which rendered her unable to move or respond to his advances, and he committed aggravated indecent assault upon her”, Steele said.

“I would expect you’ll hear from the women who are similarly situated an expression of gratitude to the prosecutors for taking the bold step of bringing this case”, he said.

Latoison said despite the fact that Cosby admitted to giving Constand pills and engaging in what he described as consensual sexual activity at his Elkins Park home, the Montgomery County DA’s initial decision not to prosecute the case may make it more hard for them to prosecute Cosby now.

A year later, Constand told her mother about the encounter, and her mother called Cosby. Prosecutors declined to file charges at that time, citing insufficient evidence.

“Upon examination of all of the evidence, today we are able to seek justice on behalf of Mr. Cosby’s victim”.

Constand said she first met Cosby – one of Temple’s most prominent and vocal boosters – through her association with the university’s women’s basketball team.

Pennsylvania law has a 12-year statute of limitations for sexual assault cases, a window that closes early next year.

Cosby did not enter a plea.

The district attorney did not name the victim, but the accusations he announced parallel the allegations made by former Temple University employee Andrea Constand. As in all USA criminal cases, the burden would be on prosecutors to persuade a jury to find Cosby guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

Cosby and his lawyers continued to deny the allegations, even as the number of accusers grew.

Cosby filed a countersuit this month against seven women who had accused him of sexual assault and sued him for defamation.

Cosby, a longtime resident of Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts, testified that he obtained quaaludes in the 1970s to give to women.

Constand declined to speak to reporters gathered outside her home in Toronto. The statements could be important for prosecutors as they try to tease out potential inconsistencies in Cosby’s version of events.

The women were mostly from the world of modeling, acting or other entertainment fields, and Cosby or his representatives denied their allegations, accusing some of them of trying to extract money from him or get ahead in show business.
