At the ceremony, many celebrities showed up with a blue ribbon hanging from their outfits. The former took Outstanding Comedy Series, while star Julia Louis-Dreyfus set an Emmy record for her sixth consecutive win playing the same character.
Last night at the 69th Primetime Emmy Awards, Netflix took home four awards: for “Television Movie” (Black Mirror: San Junipero), “Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Drama Series” (John Lithgow in The Crown), “Writing For A Comedy Series” (Aziz Ansari and Lena Waithe for Master Of None), and “Writing For A Limited Series, Movie Or Drama” (Charlie Brooker for Black Mirror: San Junipero). That’s not great, Bob. And while that fact would obviously be worth celebrating no matter what, it’s especially huge considering that the majority of the Emmys’ female winners came from female-led shows.
With her win Sunday night, Louis-Dreyfus now is tied with Cloris Leachman for most Emmy wins. Otherwise, it could end up like Amazon, which made a pop with shows like “Transparent” and “Mozart in the Jungle”, but hasn’t been able to maintain momentum. And now here comes Hulu, which just planted its own Emmys flag thanks to a show that-its problematic relationship with race notwithstanding-focuses on the ways society can strip women of their agency. In a sharp purple tux, Glover accepted the Emmy for his critically acclaimed show Atlanta.
The Emmys rewarded cable’s efforts as well.
Saturday Night Live had nine Emmy wins in total, with The Handmaid’s Tale and Big Little Lies scoring eight each. It’s a good thing HBO did; otherwise it would’ve been sucking wind compared to its streaming network contemporaries. With shows like The Handmaid’s Tale and Atlanta favored over Stranger Things and This Is Us, the TV Academy went for little seen series instead of big broad hits. Netflix’s first best drama series nomination came in 2013 with House of Cards, but it lost to AMC’s Breaking Bad. The HBO series, which received five awards, many in technical categories at the Creative Arts Emmys, went home empty-handed after the live Emmys telecast on CBS.
Kidman and Big Little Lies producer Bruna Papandrea are expected to ride the wave of their TV miniseries all the way to the stage. And the TV world hasn’t always fared much better; a 2013 study by TV.com found that in a category like Comedy Writing, for instance, women made up just 15 percent of all nominees from 1980-2012, so you can expect the winners over the years to reflect that inequality, too.

Fiona Dourif, star of BBC America’s “Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency”, told AFP she was now watching “The Handmaid’s Tale” and hoped to see Moss rewarded, as well as “Stranger Things”.
