Auburn benches QB Jeremy Johnson, will start Sean White

Auburn quarterback Jeremy Johnson (6) fumbles near his own goal line in the second half of an NCAA college football game in Baton Rouge, La., Saturday, September 19, 2015. Auburn was just dominated by Leonard Fournette to the tune of 228 yards and three touchdowns and Johnson was benched in favor of Sean White. Johnson has been horrendous this season, leading Malzahn to choose a redshirt freshman as his new starter.

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) The Auburn Tigers are changing starting quarterbacks. The Tigers opened the season with a 31-24 win over Louisville, but since then they were taken to overtime by FCS power Jacksonville State and embarrassed 45-21 by LSU.

White, a 6-foot, 200-pound quarterback, was ranked as the No. 8 pro-style quarterback recruit in the country in the class of 2014, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.

Auburn defensive end auto Lawson will remain sidelined indefinitely with a right hip injury. We’ll get behind him and I know his teammates will also.

Malzahn said he and offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee chose to make the move Tuesday morning. Despite playing sparingly in two seasons as Nick Marshall’s backup, Johnson’s stock rose significantly all offseason, as he ended the preseason with 12/1 Heisman odds, according to Bovada, which tied him for fourth with Leonard Fournette, Nick Chubb, Cody Kessler and Deshaun Watson.

“We expect him to play well”. He’ll support Sean. He’ll get reps still in practice. “I’m looking forward to going watching him play”.

A redshirt freshman known for his accuracy, White has not thrown a pass at Auburn.

“Every time I see (White) throw the ball, he’s an accurate passer”, Coleman said.
