Auburn cuts off Memphis at the pass
The Tigers from Tennessee were held to just 10 points, 206 yards of offense, and three yards per offensive play…a season-low in all categories for Memphis.

For the first time since the first half of the Louisville game to start the season the Auburn defense was healthy. The Tigers took the lead at 17-10 at the 3:12 mark in the third period on an 11-yard pass in the flat from Jeremy Johnson to Jason Smith to cap a drive that covered 44 yards in eight plays after a 28-yard punt return by Davis. Jake Elliott connected on a 53-yard field goal and Reggis Ball returned an interception for a touchdown, tying the game at 10 at halftime.
Auburn starting quarterback Sean White was shaky at best early in the game.
Johnson threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Jason Smith on his first play of the game in the third quarter and added a five-yard scoring run on the first play of the final quarter.
According to The Ledger-Enquirer, the Auburn equipment staff was warned that if Ball were to get an interception, he has a history of attempting to steal a ball from the opponent after the game.
White was 8 of 13 for 103 yards.
The 6-foot-7, 245-pounder has been projected as a top-five overall pick in this spring’s National Football League draft by multiple draft analysts, including ESPN’s Todd McShay, who most recently predicted he will be the No. 2 overall pick to the Cleveland Browns.
Memphis won the toss and Auburn took the football. The pass gave Auburn a first down on the three-yard line but the drive stalled before Daniel Carlson kicked a 20-yard field goal.
These players showed that they can be a great defense, and hopefully Steele builds on that momentum into the offseason and into 2016.
NOTES: Memphis and Auburn met only twice in football before Wednesday’s game. “But that’s going to happen when you have games like today against a good defense”.
Ball had two of Memphis’ three interceptions in the first half. Auburn outgained Memphis 402-205 in total yards within the 1st game since defensive coordinator Will Muschamp left to grow to be South Carolina’s head coach. The play calling in the second half was much better as he leaned on Jovon Robinson and let him finish off Memphis.

Auburn received the ball first and easily drove deep into Memphis territory.
