To say that the tenure of Malzahn at Auburn has been a little rocky might be an understatement. During all the open media viewing portion’s of Auburn’s spring practice, the Tigers’ fourth-year head coach was seen giving hands-on instruction to the quarterbacks group and specifically being obvious in his involvement in junior college transfer John Franklin III. Not only did they not win the SEC, they finished in last place in the SEC West with a 2-6 conference record and a 7-6 overall record. Should Auburn struggle on the field again here in 2016, it wouldn’t be all that shocking to see Auburn pull the trigger on letting him go.

In his three seasons as Auburn’s head coach, Malzahn is 27-13.

Malzahn had to hire five new members of his coaching staff, including Kevin Steele to be the third defensive coordinator during his four-year tenure and the team’s fifth in six years. There’s a bunch of schools in this league that would love to be in that position with a guy like him. It doesn’t matter what year it is.

Jay Jacobs said Malzahn would be the Tigers coach for a “long, long time” and called him “the right guy for Auburn” moving forward. The new agreement will run through December 31, 2020.

The buyout structure of the deal – $2,237,500 per year – did not change in the amendment signed on April 1, 2016.
