“We do expect him back soon”, Malzahn said.

The only players exempt from the full-contact status of the scrimmage are the three players battling for the starting quarterback position: Sean White, Jeremy Johnson and John Franklin III. Offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee denied there as an issue, but Davis was spotted practicing with Auburn’s other injured players on Sunday. The heat has been very intense, which is always good to get the guys prepared as far as that goes. “I’m hoping to do that”. “We are really hoping not to have to do that”. One will be named the starter soon enough, and a Tuesday scrimmage in Jordan-Hare Stadium could go a long way in determining the victor.

Malzahn didn’t say he’d name a starter after the scrimmage, but allowed a “I guess it’s always possible”. “When you’ve coached 26 years, you just know and usually the team knows too. We chose to put him at running back first and give him a chance to do that and we’ll see how it goes”.

“I’m just working every day to get back for my team”, he says. I think our defense has really improved each day.

It was announced Sunday afternoon that Auburn football freshman running back Stephen Davis Jr. will be out for the season with a knee injury and will be forced the redshirt. Williams didn’t practice Sunday due to an ankle injury and is “day to day”. Right now, he’s playing running back.

When asked Wednesday if Taylor was expected back on the practice field after a few days, Malzahn responded with “that’s our hope”.

Davis Jr. was ranked as the 17th best athlete nationally and No. 6 prospect in the state of SC in the 2016 recruiting class. Davis Jr.’s senior season ended short after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee in September but was given full medical clearance this week before fall camp began.
