Auburn’s defense, big second half seals Birmingham Bowl victory over Memphis
No defensive coordinator, no problem.

The Memphis Tigers play the Auburn Tigers in Birmingham Bowl 2015 on Wednesday, December 30 kick off time at 12:00 PM ET, at Legion Field.
There were a lot of positives in this game for Auburn after a disappointing 6-6 regular season.
Memphis registered their second straight nine-win season behind the arm of quarterback Paxton Lynch.
Johnson made his snaps count, including a handoff for Robinson’s fourth-quarter touchdown. It was also the lowest total yards the Tigers had allowed to an opponent all year. That leaves linebackers coach Lance Thompson running the defense and GAs Travis Williams (linebacker) and Blake Gideon (secondary) coaching positions.
Auburn was facing a Memphis offense who had scored 42.7 points per game (6th nationally) and a quarterback in Paxton Lynch who had thrown for 305 yards per game (13th nationally) in a bowl game that they hardly pictured themselves playing in just four short months ago…all of this without their defensive coordinator, Will Muschamp.
Lynch was sacked by freshman Jeff Holland while Carlton Davis and junior Montravius Adams shared the other sack. It was Gus Malzahn’s first bowl victory as a head coach. “I am extremely happy for our seniors”.
If you watched the Birmingham Bowl on Wednesday, then you saw Auburn end their season on a high note. “He gave us momentum in the second half, there is no doubt about that”. Jovon Robinson paced Auburn with 124 yards and a score, while Peyton Barber added 41 yards. The Tigers passed for 151 yards and one score.
Auburn’s third-year coach ended up using those packages to the offense’s advantage and making Johnson the unlikely hero.
Ball had two interceptions in the game and returned one of them 53 yards for a touchdown before his postgame antics.
The loss of Fuente shouldn’t sway bettors away from taking Memphis today. And it’s all because of a football – rather one Memphis player’s intense desire to take one. However, the drive stalled at the Memphis three-yard-line. Johnson’s TD run came with 1:58 left in the first quarter.
After Memphis Tigers suffered a 31-10 defeat to Auburn Tigers, Ball ran away with the game ball after taunting and flipping off Auburn fans as he ran into the locker room.
Another field goal try by Elliott, from 34 yards out, was blocked by Blake Countess.
Malzahn announced before the game that Sean White, not Johnson, would start the game. Their drive stalled, sending the game to the half tied at 10.
The second half was all Auburn.
Johnson played nearly the entire fourth quarter when the game was in hand, but he was only asked to throw one pass … and it went for a touchdown. The narrative goes like this: An SEC team, having seen its big dreams go bust, arrives at a secondary destination with nothing to play for.
Davis was beaming after the game.
He’s definitely a load to tackle, but I think I taught him a couple moves.

“We have a great relationship”, Johnson said. “We really wanted to put pressure on the quarterback”. The Memphis defense limited any damage from the turnover, forcing Auburn to punt. They again stalled in Auburn territory for if another field goal attempt.
