Audi A3 e-tron plug-in hybrid to get updates to styling, tech

For 2017, Audi’s smallest sedan and convertible lineup now boasts the same technology available in its most expensive models.

And the 2017 A3 e-tron should also achieve the same EPA-rated 83 MPGe combined and 16 miles of all-electric range as the 2016 model.

Additionally, the base front-wheel drive A3 swaps last year’s 1.8-liter 4-cylinder for the same 2.0-liter 4-cylinder turbocharged engine previously exclusive to the all-wheel drive model. Since this isn’t a full-on redesign, the changes are more evolutionary than revolutionary, but no model-not even the A3 Cabriolet, which may not be long for this world-was exempt from updates. The refreshed A3 Sedan and Cabriolet (Audi’s convertible version of the compact sedan) both make 220 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, while the high-performance S3 makes 292 horsepower and 280 lb. -ft. of torque en route to a 0-60 miles per hour time of 4.7 seconds.

The 2017 Audi S3 performance sedan starts at $43,850 for the Premium Plus model, while the Prestige model is priced at $49,350.

All 2017 prices include a $950 destination charge. Pricing will be announced later. The infotainment system now supports handwriting-recognition technology while the optional smartphone interface provides owners with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The front end is slightly revised with new undercut headlights and a larger Singleframe grille, while the back end gets new LED taillights and an updated bumper and diffuser for the Cabriolet.

Audi has made some updates to the A3’s available electronic safety equipment as well; the automaker’s radar-based forward collision warning and autonomous braking system is now standard.

Meanwhile the interior also welcomes a host of improvements including a three-spoke multifunction steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, a 10-speaker and 180 watt surround sound system in the sedan as standard, a selection of new aluminum trimmings and different six-way power adjustable front seats. The standard 2.0-liter TFSI four-cylinder with 220 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque comes standard on all A3 models while the S3 receives a more powerful variant of the same engine, instead offering up 292 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque.
