August Marks Deadliest Month for Chicago
One of the frustrations of Chicago, say both Walker and Jenkins, is that the city had begun to implement “focused deterrence” strategies touted as the most sophisticated for combating gun violence – an approach combining police investigatory capacities with social-service interventions created to help potential victims and perpetrators of violence build alternatives.

The August spike comes as the city is grappling with a particularly violent year, recording 487 homicides “and more than 2,800 people shot so far this year, compared to 491 homicides and 2,988 people shot all of last year, according to Tribune data”. The city’s police department said Thursday, Sept. 1, 2016, Chicago recorded 90 homicides in August, its highest monthly death toll in two decades.
The latest victim, 16-year-old Elijah Sims, and a 15-year-old friend were shot late Monday as they were hanging out on the city’s West Side, police said.
Nobody is safe in Chicago, even National Basketball Association star, Dwayne Wade’s cousin was shot and killed in the Windy city while she was pushing a stroller.
“It’s primarily being driven by gang-related activity, and the fact that criminals in these communities believe they are less likely to be stopped by police so they are choosing to carry guns”, Cohen said. “We have no choice but to be involved, meaning every person on every block, if we want to save the next generation”.
The number is more than the total number of homicides in NY and Los Angeles – America’s two biggest cities – combined. “And the president is deeply concerned about addressing some of the root causes of violence in those communities”. August of that year also saw 85 homicides and June of that year saw 90.
“We have allowed our police department to get fetal and it is having a direct effect”, he said then, according to The Washington Post. These numbers add to the concerning violence rates the city has experienced over the past year, with 468 murders and over 2,848 shooting victims.
The Chicago Police is now working on a list of 14,000 individuals who are at higher risks of participating in gun violence due to prior offenses or crimes, as well, as investigating the upper risks of victims in the city.
26, and Derren Sorrells, 22, brothers, have been charged with first-degree murder.
We have got to use what I would call soft power. And that vision for America would continue to flood cities like Chicago with even more guns and put even more innocent lives on the line – like those who are playing in parks or walking down the street. “People with middle-class values and wherewithal have moved out, so what you have left are the poorest of the poor, the most hopeless of the hopeless, the most destitute of the destitute”, Arthur Lurigio, professor of criminal justice and psychology at Loyola University, told Al Jazeera.
Less than three hours later, another Chicagoan was shot to death.
The Chicago Police Department is now under investigation by the Justice Department for suspected misconduct in their methods of law enforcement, primarily their interactions with African-Americans. Police say they made 18 percent more murder arrests this August compared to August 2015.
Hardiman asked Chicago Police Supt.
And while I respect the pastor’s opinion, I think that what we need to be thinking about is, how we can move forward together as a community to solve this issue as a community? The investigation was announced on December 7, 2015, two weeks after the police released video of the shooting of Laquan McDonald.

Rauner said the idea “wouldn’t make sense”, adding that “no thoughtful leader thinks that’s a good idea or would really provide a solution”.
