This morning, the University System of Georgia Board of Regents voted unanimously to change the name of Georgia Regents University to Augusta University. University System planners suggest the board ask state lawmakers for $2 billion in state funding for the 2016-’17 fiscal year.

Officials said in a statement Monday that a special regents search committee and a presidential search and screening committee have been assembled to find a replacement for President Brooks Keel, who will soon lead Georgia Regents University. “This is an exciting time for the new Augusta University, and we see tremendous opportunity for growth and development of this university as a world-class research institution and a top 50 medical school in the nation”.

Chairman Neil Pruitt says the change builds on the university’s partnership with the community.
