Austin police warn of active shooting incident downtown

A gunman killed a woman and seriously wounded three others in Austin early on Sunday when he shot into a crowd as people streamed out of nightclubs in the Texas capital’s downtown area, police said. Police arrived to find a chaotic scene and five people shot. He was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries after onlookers, in a bold move, worked to wrestle the firearm from the shooter, and were able to successfully disarm him. Three other victims were taken to University Medical Center Brackenridge with gunshot wounds, and one additional victim refused transport.

One woman is dead and a shooter still on the loose as Austin police work two separate scenes on 6th Street. As part of our efforts we urge anyone with personal video of the shooting or its aftermath to submit it via email to [email protected].

“We have multiple individuals, witnesses, that we are now interviewing”, Mr Manley said. Seven minutes later, a shooting at 800 Trinity-just a five-minute walk from the initial shooting, according to Google Maps-prompted Austin police to tweet about an “active shooter”. He is a person of interest in the recent shooting that ended the life of 30-year-old Teqnika Moultrie.

Authorities say they received a call regarding “multiple shots” being fired on 6th street in the downtown area. “But again that’s not what our assessment is at this point”, explained APD Chief of Staff Brian Manley.

“Active shooter incident downtown, multiple victims”.

On June 12, a gunman who sympathized with Islamist extremist groups killed 49 people at a nightclub in Orlando, Florida, in the deadliest mass shooting in modern USA history.

Police are still hunting the person responsible, believed to be a man in his 20s, and are interviewing witnesses. The suspect in this shooting was allegedly engaging in an aggravated robbery and fired at his would-be victim.

Early Sunday, the area around Sixth and Brazos streets was still shut down as police processed the scene.

Both scenes are said to be secure, but authorities have urged people in the southern U.S. city to stay away from the downtown area.
