Australia call up Coulter-Nile after Starc injury

Coulter-Nile is supposed to be the 12th man in the side, unless one or more fast bowlers have fitness concerns.

Peter Siddle has a back niggle but Steve Smith indicated the Victorian veteran should play against the Windies.

James Pattinson is expected to replace Starc in the starting XI in Hobart on December 10.

Richardson, 53, was one of the West Indies’ greatest batsmen, scoring 16 centuries in 86 Tests at 44.39 before his retirement in 1995.

Australia referred to as up uncapped paceman Nathan Coulter-Nile for the primary check towards West Indies on Tuesday as a alternative for left-arm seamer Mitchell Starc, who was dominated out of the collection as a result of a damaged foot.

Pat Cummins remains sidelined with a serious back injury, while Mitchell Johnson’s retirement has also given selectors some headaches.

Since then, they have lost ten of the 11 Tests played there, a dismal record which has coincided with their slide precariously close to the bottom of the ICC Test rankings.

However, David Saker, Victoria and former England coach, blasted the selectors for their decision to select Coulter-Nile ahead of numerous pacers who have performed well in the domestic circuit in recent times.

He only recently resumed bowling after a shoulder injury and has a history of hamstring trouble. “We’ve come with a lot of belief”, he said.

The team has arrived after a disappointing tour of Sri Lanka that brought just one victory (in a T20 match), and with just four players – Marlon Samuels, Kemar Roach, Jerome Taylor and Denesh Ramdin – who have previous Test experience Down Under.

“But we don’t get too many of them so we’ll go with our gut feeling”.

“We’ve had our eye on Nathan for a long time”.

I think once we do well here, what is important is we continue to do well.

West Indies can compete with Australia in the upcoming three-test series if they can exploit the inexperience in the hosts’ middle order, captain Jason Holder said yesterday. “We need to make that steady progression forward”.

“We’re anxious about players breaking down but we’ve got to trust medical staff, we’ve got to trust the players”.

Andrew Fekete was picked for the postponed tour of Bangladesh but recently dropped by Tasmania, a pointer to his current form struggles.

“On the depth chart we’ve got 20 fast bowlers that we rate a chance of playing (for Australia)”, Marsh said.
