Australia key to core of US’ Asia-Pacific pivot, says Biden
USA and Australian troops plan to step up training so that they are “fully prepared” to answer challenges in the Pacific, United States Vice-President Joe Biden said yesterday amid rising tensions over Beijing’s claims in the South China Sea. Jill Biden said American sponsored programs are helping high school girls around the world to learn computer and information technology skills.

US Vice President Joe Biden has urged people not to worry too much about the upcoming presidential election, saying the “better angels” will prevail.

Biden would have an interest in Indonesia’s position, Key said, and would also “get a read-out of the way we’re seeing it”.
“The United States is here in the Pacific to stay”, Biden told reporters. “And that is vital because our presence in the region…is essential to maintaining peace and stability, without which the economic growth and prosperity I believe would falter”, Biden told a packed hall.
In other developments, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop and Defence Minister Marise Payne are heading for Washington, where they will represent Australia at a meeting of defence and foreign ministers of Coalition countries fighting ISIS in Iraq.
Rounding off his four-day official visit to Australia with an address at event hosted by several think-tanks here, Biden recalled the century of linkages between the two nations.
Of the latest violence, Biden said: “My heart goes out … to those families”.
Biden is expected to land at Auckland International Airport at 6pm on Wednesday, making him the most senior U.S. politician to come here since President Bill Clinton attended the Apec summit in Auckland in 1999.
