A police plane circled overhead as the drama unfolded on the beach.
A Perth man has driven his 4WD into the ocean in an effort to avoid police, following a pursuit.
But as police closed in, the man appeared to make a last-ditch bid for freedom by accelerating straight into breaking waves.
At one point the man climbed on to the bonnet of his vehicle, but struggled to stay on as waves washed over him.
The vehicle was quickly submerged.
“We had tried to coax him into shore but he refused to do that and was taking items out of the vehicle and tossing them around, so we made a decision to go in”, Bruse said.

Earlier, the driver stopped at an intersection of several tracks, got out of the vehicle, appeared to deflate the tyre pressure and drove on towards the beach.
