Trump must notify Congress 90 days before signing the pact, which will need the approval of lawmakers.
Trump reportedly said Canada is “working their ass off”, the Star reported. “They haven’t said anything specific about real problems they have with us”.
During his interview with Bloomberg News, Trump discussed other countries as well-saying that he planned to proceed with tariffs on Chinese imports.
“There is no political necessity to keep Canada in the new NAFTA deal. I can’t kill these people”, Trump said of the Canadian government, according to the Star report, which cited an anonymous source.
“And I said, off the record, and I made a statement about Canada, which is fine”.
Trump added to that sentiment a few hours later, saying there is “no political necessity” for Canada to be included in a trade deal involving the US and Mexico. Freeland planned to be on the call, as did Canada’s ambassador to the U.S., David MacNaughton, and Dominic LeBlanc, the federal minister responsible for intergovernmental affairs.
China has responded to United States tariffs by imposing retaliatory taxes on the same value of U.S. products and has filed complaints against the tariffs at the WTO. It was unclear whether the two countries had agreed a deal.
Trump argues Canada’s hefty dairy tariffs are hurting USA farmers, an important political base for his Republican party.
This product is still a “pretty tiny” share of the market, but its advent raised new alarm bells in Canada, said von Massow.

“If the Canadian market is opened up, I would anticipate a very long transition period, so whatever benefits might accrue would be quite far down the line”, she said, pointing to slow uptake by business of provisions included in the Canada-EU trade agreement known as CETA.
