Ms Handa, a New Zealand citizen who was originally from Auckland, is believed to have been living and working as a psychologist in Brisbane for the past six years.
Having arrived from Australia the previous week for vacation, New Zealand national Keshia Handa (31) attended a salsa party on the terrace of the hotel with two of her friends.
Ms Handa was at the Grand Hotel de Londres on the night she died, according to Turkish media.
The Hurriyet Daily News says the 31-year-old was with a group at a salsa party on the hotel rooftop.
Ms Handa participated in Latin and Indian dance activities and sometimes acted as well.
Rea Turner said Ms Handa had created a regular dance party that Ms Turner said Ms Handa excelled at.
Ms Handa’s relatives had arrived in Istanbul and would fly home with her body, BGN News said. “I’m completely in shock”.
“We would see each other at least twice a week…it was absolutely her passion from what I knew”.
“She was just a delightful person – really warm and genuine and just very caring”, she said.
“She was also an accomplished belly dancer and just a very good dancer and a very enthusiastic person in terms of that”.
New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (Mfat) said it was aware of “the tragic death of a New Zealander” in the Turkish city.
The hotel’s owner Ibrahim Huzmeli told BGN News the event was an accident and staff were deeply saddened by the tragedy.
