Australia found another gear in the final, allowing Bronte and Cate, the 24-year-old 100m free world record holder, to celebrate their first Olympic relay gold together.

The Australian quartet of Emma McKeon, Brittany Elmslie, Bronte Campbell and Cate Campbell won in a time of three minutes 30.65 seconds.

The day’s record spree began with Britain’s Adam Peaty, who broke his own world mark of 57.92 in the heats of the 100 breaststroke when he clocked 57.55.

Australia won a second Olympic swimming gold medal on the opening day of Rio 2016 by setting a world record in the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay. Now they already have two.

Rio de Janeiro: Cate Campbell hopes Australia’s brilliant start in the pool can drive the swim team to a golden week at the Olympic Aquatic Centre.

He has had problems out of the pool since London, serving a three-month ban in 2014 after testing positive for a banned stimulant and spending a week in jail for crashing a auto while driving without a licence. He never actually served the ban. “I’m really happy with it”.
