Despite Saturday’s downgrade, hundreds are thought to be in danger today as the out-of-control bushfire continues to burn near towns along the iconic Great Ocean Road.

An update on the Falls official Facebook page late on Friday night warned ticket-holders that there was a genuine possibility the event would be scrapped if the devastating conditions continued.
Bruce Hutchinson from Kennett River also sought refuge at an evacuation centre.
“We don’t want to hear of injuries”. There are only two inland roads through the locality outside the township itself: Wye Road runs inland from the coast, much of it forming the border with Wye River, and the Benwerrin-Mount Sabine Road runs roughly north-south around the western edge of the locality. Fortunately steady rain has eased the forward spread, of the fire, but it remains within 10 kilometres of Lorne.
Residents of Lorne, which is less than 15 kilometres from the festival, were issued with an emergency evacuation warning early on Saturday morning.
The main firefront had not gone through Kennet River, but firefighters defending homes there had put out spot fires and no properties had been reported burnt.
Despite the arrival of the cool change, which brought rain, fire authorities said the fire remained “pretty significant in size” and was still out of control.
Many people who have evacuated from their homes gathered at the Apollo Bay Leisure Centre.
The Bureau of Meteorology predicted a top of 18C at Lorne on Boxing Day and up to 20mm of rain.
“Things are unstable, things are unsettling as well, there is a real sense of concern in those local communities”.
Victoria’s Fire Commissioner Craig Lapsley said the fire surrounded the southern part of Wye River, burning several properties. “It’s a lightning strike that started just under a week ago, and it’s in exactly the wrong spot to have a fire”, he said.
The temperature is set to rise back over 30 on the Surf Coast on New Year’s Eve but Mr Lapsley said this was not accompanied by high winds.

“We have just concluded our emergency services meeting, we continuing to work through the current situation with all authorities”, organisers announced in a statement.
