In recent days, new legislation has come into force in Germany that is aimed at making it easier to send home people who don’t qualify for asylum – a measure aimed primarily at citizens of Balkan nations such as Albania and Kosovo. Hungary chose to build a border fence not only to stem the surging tide of refugees, but also in an attempt to preserve the ability that European Union residents have to travel within the European Union without documents.
Earlier yesterday the premier of the German state of Bavaria criticised neighbouring Austria for failing to coordinate a tide of migrants into southern Germany even as he renewed a challenge to German Chancellor Angela Merkel over her management of the refugee crisis.
Refuting claims that the fence risked creating human bottlenecks, Mikl-Leitner pointed the finger at Germany, saying border police there processed “too few migrants”. “I expect this to occur immediately”, he said.
Austrian Interior Minister Johanna Mikl-Leitner last week raised the possibility of a “European Fortress”, before suggesting on Tuesday that Austria should erect “special construction measures” on the border with Slovenia.
The move was a hard test for European solidarity and a number of countries in the eastern bloc criticized Germany’s move, which made their countries conduits for thousands of migrants trying to reach more prosperous northern Europe.
Paramedics and doctors try to revive a young boy after a boat with refugees and migrants sunk while was crossing the Aegean sea from Turkey to the Greek island of Lesbos, on Wednesday, October 28, 2015.
Speaking in Kosovo, Austrian President Heinz Fischer said his country had handled refugee crises before though it was now facing an influx the likes of which the Alpine nation of 8.5 million people had never experienced.
In separate comments to state broadcaster ORF, she spoke of the need for a “fence” to maintain public order. Meanwhile Defence Minister Gerald Klug indicated that the railings or “containers” could be set up to “be able to control the refugees in an orderly way”, reported Belfast Telegraph.
Political leaders in the Netherlands are calling for a halt to threats and intimidation amid heated debate on providing shelter for thousands of asylum seekers entering the country.

In Sweden, the country’s immigration agency said it will discontinue publicizing the location of refugee housing facilities after more than 20 fires, many considered arsons.
