Police in the Austrian capital of Vienna have stepped up security around the city after a warning to several European capitals about a possible terror attack between Christmas and New Year.
Vienna police were not immediately available to comment. “We have no evidence in that they are in Vienna, and we have no evidence in that they are even in Europe”, he added, in accordance to the Guardian. They also asked Austrians to show understanding for increased controls while stating that other police forces across Europe had also received the same warning, advising them to increase security measures in the coming days accordingly.
Extra steps include surveillance in crowded spaces, “especially at events and traffic hubs” as well as intensive identity checks and higher alertness for objects which could carry explosives such as bags or “bicycle frames”, it said.
The warning comes after jihadist gunmen and suicide bombers killed 130 people in a series of coordinated attacks in Paris on November 13. Police were instructed to stay vigilant at church services last week.
Christoph Poelzi, a spokesman for Vienna cops officers, told the Austria Press Agency there was no concrete threat to a selected place at a specific time.
