Mid-air collision between two planes killed four people near Brown Field at Otay Mesa Sunday.

Brown Field is located 1.5 miles north of the Mexican border and 13 miles southeast of downtown San Diego.

The crash caused a two-acre brush fire that has been put out, Schuler said.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the accident, Gregor said. New York Times reported that there were no survivors and that the names of the deceased have not been released.

Debris from the collision landed in a field close to the airport and triggered a brush fire which was eventually extinguished by firefighters.

No cause has been given, officials said.

The fourth was a contract employee with the military contracting company, which leased the aircraft.

Brian Vowell, a pilot based in Nevada who frequently flies into Brown Field, said the control tower monitors a three-mile ring around the airport, up to 3,000 feet.

Officials said they have found four bodies in the wreckage, which was strewn across a wide area.

“BAE Systems employees send their thoughts and prayers to the family members and co-workers of those killed”, spokesperson Amanda Desourdis said. The planes broke into “multiple pieces”, Schuler said.

One firefighter was taken to the hospital after he suffered a minor heat-related exhaustion injury.

“We don’t know anything about the identities of the victims nor where they were taking off or where they were going”, he added.
