Indianapolis police say a carjacking suspect was fatally shot by police on the city’s northeast side after he accelerated a vehicle at officers.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said the shooting happened just after 11 p.m. They said officers noticed a auto near East 30th Street and North Chester Avenue that matched the description of a vehicle that had been carjacked in the 3100 block of Thompkins Square Court earlier that evening.

The driver of the vehicle, later identified as Andre Green, refused to comply with the officers’ requests to get out of the vehicle. Police say the driver was holding a firearm when he exited the vehicle and collapsed.

Green was pronounced dead on the scene.

IMPD Lt. Richard Riddle said he does not believe the police cars involved were equipped with dashboard cameras.

Andre slammed into the driver’s’ side of one of the cruisers, “narrowly missing” an officer as he tried to escape, police said.

Investigators said there is no current active search happening.

The officers who shot the teen will be placed on paid leave as police investigate, which is standard procedure in any officer-involved shooting.

The press release said the driver ignored the officers’ shouted orders and stayed inside his vehicle.

They later recovered a handgun near his body, authorities said. “He was a good person”, said Andre’s sister, Tericka Jackson.

“We can say with confidence that officers were faced with aggression and they met that aggression head-on”, said IMPD officer Chris Wilburn.

“We don’t know who else was in the auto with him, but we’re asking you, could you please come forward?”

Allen Eaton, 29, who said he was standing last night on a nearby corner and witnessed the shooting, told The Star that Green bumped into the police cars as he tried to turn around in a dead end. You saw something. You saw them shoot him. “Please come forward”.

He added that several investigations were being performed by the critical incident response team and the police department would provide more information as they move forward.
