Authorities: Slaying suspect later shot at family’s car

Law enforcement is looking for information from witnesses who might have information about a vehicle involved in a drive-by shooting that was later involved in an officer-involved shooting on Interstate 39/90.

Around the same time as the DeForest and Sauk County shooting incidents, the Wisconsin Department of Transportation reported all lanes of traffic on I-39/90/94 were shut down in both directions between Highway 51 and Highway 60 so that law enforcement could respond to the shooting near DeForest.

Investigators plan a 2 p.m. news conference at the Wisconsin’s State Patrol headquarters in DeForest.

The DOJ said West Allis police were called early Sunday morning for a report of a man forcibly entering two apartments.

The driver’s 44-year-old wife was taken to a hospital in Baraboo and then transferred to UW Hospital in Madison by MedFlight.

Another witness then called 911 to report following the suspect vehicle in the Sauk County drive-by shooting, a Chevrolet SUV, east on Interstate 90-94 in Columbia County, heading toward Dane County.

The suspect’s brothers, ages 30 and 34, were also in the Blazer.

Police say one of the suspects was responsible for a fatal shooting at a West Allis apartment building shortly before 7 a.m. One minute later dispatchers were notified that the suspect was down – shot in the shoulder by two Columbia County deputies who are now on paid leave, which is customary in an officer-involved shooting.

The 20-year old suspect also had made threats to a member of Epikos Church, which canceled services scheduled for Sunday evening in Milwaukee.

At 3:22 p.m. the 20-year-old West Allis man got out of his vehicle and began walking toward authorities holding a firearm.

The woman was in “very critical condition” Monday, Dane County Sheriff Dave Mahoney said, declining to reveal any more information. There was no immediate word on the suspect’s condition.

Mahoney couldn’t explain why the man chose to attack the family, saying only that the attack appeared to be random and the investigation continues.

When they arrived, police found a male victim with a gunshot wound who later died from their injuries sustained during the robbery, according to a Department of Justice release. One of the deputies has been with the department for nine and a half years, Richards said.

Meanwhile, other agencies were notified and Dane County deputies quickly moved eastbound traffic to the side as they deployed stop strips.
