The plane crashed at about 10 a.m. local time near an intersection in West Caldwell, New Jersey, about 20 miles northwest of New York, said West Caldwell Fire Department Chief James Alvine.

State police say a sport utility vehicle crashed into the back of a dump truck stopped on the shoulder of Route 80, killing two men and leaving another seriously injured. He has not been identified and his family has not yet been notified.

At least one person – the plane’s 50-year-old pilot on his way to Teterboro Airport – is dead, according to Cpt. Within seconds, he said, he heard a clipping noise, which he thinks was the plane hitting trees nearby. The plane crashed about 100 feet from the playground at Kiddie Academy.

Both the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are probing the incident.
