A Leicestershire Police spokesman said: ‘Prior to the collision police had received reports of a vehicle travelling the wrong way down the southbound carriageway of the M1.
The elderly driver of the blue Mazda Premacy is believed to have been driving the wrong way along the carriageway before he smashed into a white Ford Transit van at 2.20am.
The M1 southbound remains closed between junction 25 (Nottingham/Derby) and 24 (East Midlands Airport/Loughborough) this afternoon.
The driver of the van was taken to the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham, where he was in a stable condition.
The southbound carriageway could be closed for large parts of the morning but two lanes of the northbound carriageway have reopened.
Highways England said spilt diesel on the road surface caused extensive damage and resurfacing work took several hours to complete.
