Autopsy underway on severed human remains found behind Toronto butcher shop

Toronto police are investigating the discovery of what appears to be human remains behind a butcher shop in the east end.

Browne would not confirm whether the remains were found in a bag or box, but said clothing was not found in the package.

The age of the victim is not yet known however police says that they believe this is a recent death, noting that there are not a lot of signs of decomposition on the person. An employee at the butcher shop made the discovery while taking out the garbage, police say.

The remains were found behind Charlie’s Meat and Seafood, in the Broadview Avenue and Gerrard Street East area, during a routine check of the premises. “We will get a better sense of that when the pathologist is done their examination”.

“I suspect it was there for a very short time frame, hours at the (most)”, he said.

She was quick to point out testing needs to be done to determine whether or not the remains are indeed human. Once the remains are identified, police could begin to construct a timeline of events to determine what led to the death.

McConnell said the headlights blinded him and he couldn’t tell if the person was carrying anything.

“There is a butcher shop nearby”, Sidhu said. “That’s where we’re at in the investigation right now”.

“Given that this item was located here I wouldn’t be surprised if there weren’t more parts somewhere elsewhere in the area”, Det. “We suspect someone would have seen something in the area”.

Baird called the situation “mind boggling” and said he hopes police can get to the bottom of it. Investigators are asking “anyone walking in the area that might have seen something that caught their attention” to contact them immediately.

In the meantime, police are canvassing the area for witnesses and security video.
