This is a massive project for DuVernay, who has shown a tremendous knack for character and POV in her previous features.

It is unclear which film will go first, but A Wrinkle in Time was first to close and it is the culmination of six months of courtship by Disney Motion Pictures president Sean Bailey and exec Tendo Nagenda. “I just got caught in a downdraft and blown off course”. There are high stakes in “A Wrinkle in Time”, as Meg Murry has to figure out how to fight darkness with light.

A Wrinkle in Time is a 1963 sci-fi novel by Madeleine L’Engle about a young girl who must journey through time and space to save her missing father. If put on the screen the right way, L’Engle’s intersecting worlds centering on two families could sustain multiple ongoing stories. So while DuVernay’s got huge expectations to live up to, she can probably rest assured that anything she turns in is bound to be better received than that earlier project. After the film hit, she was offered Marvel’s Black Panther, but turned the Disney-owned studio down. That one has Lupita Nyong’o attached to star, and boasts a script by Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly.
